Hey everyone, my name is Taylor Brown and I’m proud to say that I am Sustainable Industrial Solutions’ new Business Development Intern.
As I’m writing this, I have resided in the Raleigh-Durham area for just over two months, and have been with SIS for only a couple weeks, but I couldn’t be happier thus far. My short time here is the result of a recent move here from Tampa to start coursework at NC State’s Masters of Environmental Assessment program. The move was something of a leap of faith for me, but most significantly, it represents the exciting first step in my transition into the sustainability industry.
Before relocating, I studied Natural Resource Economics at the University of Florida, focusing on agricultural and environmental business management. My initial gravitation towards environmental studies was strong, and it all began with my love for the ocean and outdoors. The pursuit of an education in economics and finance, however, was intended to facilitate the ability to apply environmental ideals in a manner that has real, quantifiable impact.
After school, I immediately began working for a commodity trading and distribution company in central Florida. My personal experience in the industry was an alarming front-row view into the relentless stressors and frivolous energy use that industrial production and distribution puts on our environment.
With this “real-world” experience, I eventually acknowledged that I had an important decision to make: Would I allow myself to be satisfied with an indifferent attitude towards the environmental injustices that I witnessed on a daily basis, or would I apply my education and passion to a life and career that leaves a positive mark on the world? After deliberation, I sided with the latter.
Armed with newfound purpose, I began looking for the right opportunity immediately upon making the decision to start grad school in North Carolina. Looking everywhere, and I mean everywhere, I was constantly researching, applying, and interviewing. After relentlessly searching, the dark clouds of pedestrianism finally gave way, and I fatefully came across this opportunity at SIS. And after proper due diligence, I realized that the match was perfect. The company’s “do good and do well” mantra truly embodies my passions and encompasses my educational and professional backgrounds while fostering a startup environment that encourages creativity and progression.
With my background in market research and customer relations as well as natural resource finance and management, I will contribute a balanced perspective to the team at SIS. A true fascination with the concept of startup ventures and building something from the ground up grows within me more and more each day. My hopes are that this opportunity will provide the solid foundation needed to begin my plans of a long and illustrious career in sustainable business management. There is clearly so much to learn at SIS, and I can’t wait to contribute in a substantial and significant way.
